About the Artist

Hans Stargardter has been a Bloomfield resident for over forty years, now retired from engineering for 20, and a full time sculptor. He is a holocaust survivor who was lucky to get out of Germany in 1939 and moved to Guatemala. His memory is that of an eleven year old, mainly of Kristallnacht, Nov. 9, 1938, when his house was partially destroyed and his father was taken to Buchenwald concentration camp.
Unable to continue school in Guatemala he became an apprentice ornamental iron worker, and the love for beautiful forms in metal has never gone away. After some 40 years as an engineer Hans returned to shaping beautiful forms out of sheet metal and learned a little from master like Francis Felton to work in pewter and anticlastic forming from Heikki Seppa. Hans has shown his work in many places in Connecticut. He is a past president of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts.
